Ukulele Recording Artist, Instructor, Producer, Songwriter, Multiple Hoku Award winner, David Kamakahi is the son of famous Slack Key Guitar master songwriter, Dennis Kamakahi. David secretly took up the ukulele at age 15 studying the stylings of the great ukulele master and mentor, Eddie Kamae, and studying myriad recordings of others such as Peter Moon, Troy Fernandez, and Ledward Kaapana. His self-discipline combined with an amazing ear for music and a clear natural talent enabled him to rapidly develop an exceptionally clean, polished, and proficient technique.
Within a year of beginning to play, David recorded with his father Dennis on 'Ohana (Family) on George Winston’s Dancing Cat Records, followed by CD, Hui Aloha, with Dennis, Martin Pahinui, and George Kuo. David then joined and toured with the group "Na Oiwi" playing contemporary Hawaiian music with father Dennis, Mike Ka'awa, and Jon Yamasato. The group recorded 2 albums, Crossroads and The Sequel.
In 2005, his debut solo album, Pa’ani, won Best Contemporary Album.
Along with his father, David recorded for the soundtrack on the Disney animated film Lilo and Stitch 2: Stitch has a Glitch specifically the theme song "Always" written by Jeanne Tesori and Alexa Junge, Hawaiian translation by Dennis Kamakahi.
David then founded his record label "Trick Bag Records" and released his second solo album, Shine.
Recently in 2011, as a member of the group Waipuna, David won multiple Hoku Awards including for Group of the Year and Island Album of the Year for their CD E Ho’i Mai.
David performs regularly at George Kahumoku’s Slack Key Show. His talent and versatility has enabled him to travel to Japan and the mainland extensively, while performing solo, duo, or with a group.
